New article on single-use strategies
In his article, Ulrich discusses single-use (SU) strategies, which are mainly used in cell cultures up to 2 m³ and offer customised solutions for harvesting and processing. These systems simplify operations by eliminating the need for cleaning and sterilisation processes and instead allow flexible system connections.
Typical process steps in a biopharmaceutical plant are used to assess whether SU is available, whether compatible methods exist, or whether traditional stainless steel technology must be used. Non-SU-compatible steps such as precipitation, extraction and thermal separation can often be replaced by compatible chromatography methods.
The 2 m³ limit is often adhered to by early capture steps. The comparison of two production plants with similar capacities shows significant savings in production space and investment when SU systems are used instead of stainless steel.
